He went to work in the dockyard in Simonstown as an apprentice Carpenter. He then joined the SA infantry Brigade in WW1 and went to Egypt and France. He was at the Battle of Dellville Wood and was one of the 150 survivors out of 3,700 men. He came back to SA after the war and he worked for the council, then for an agent at the market in CT and later became an auctioneer at the market. He also worked in the Deeds office and at the Racecourse. He played rugby for Gardens RFC before the war.
